of Mount Chocorua.

Probably the most hiked mountain in the White Mountain National Forest, Mount Chocorua rises 2,600 feet above the forest carpet and 3,500 feet above sea level. Certainly not a tall mountain by most standards, it does, however, hold its own in steepness of climb. Due to the mountain's popularity, hikers have a variety of trail options to choose from in their quest for mountaintop glory.

Those who make it to the top are justly rewarded with an unobstructed, 360-degree view, thanks in part to the lack of vegetation affixed to the mountain's crown. It's a good thing mountain toupees don't exist because this mountain would be a good candidate for one. I wonder if Mount Chocorua would feel more confident with a full head of trees and vegetation? It works for men, why not mountains?

Mount Chocorua. I like how that rolls off the tongue, Chocorua. Sounds kinda exotic. Well, there are a few legends that swirl around the namesake. The most interesting one involves fox poison, a dead child, revenge, and a leap to sudden death.

Has your interest been sufficiently piqued? Do you want to learn more about the legend while hiking with me and my friend Bill? If so, come on along, our hike is about to begin.
