A true treasure of Texas, Space Control Houston is a special place where you can learn more about the interesting world of space exploration and travel. The complete experience of this place is realized only when you tour both the expansive Visitor Center as well as take the Tram Tour that shuttles you to various points of interest in and around the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.
Established in 1961, the Johnson Space Center was born with President Kennedy's passionate directive to create an organization whose ultimate goal was to land a man on the moon. This, of course, was in response to the Soviet Union's early successes in space, including launching the first space satellite. NASA, the administrating body of this impressive complex, has created a rich history of space exploration, including the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Space Shuttle Projects.
The Visitor Center is filled with captivating and inspiring exhibits such as the Starship Gallery which, as a whole, represent some of the very best this tourist attraction has to offer. Sights within the gallery include actual spacecraft, realistic scale models, extensive displays on the history of the various space programs, moon rocks, a moon touchstone, and the actual training equipment used during the Skylab Project.
Other sights within the Visitor Center include a mockup of the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station, a variety of spacesuits, Kids Space Place, Mazda Theater, flight control simulators, a Lunar Lander, and a variety of informational displays that'll certainly pique your interest.
A visit to Space Center Houston isn't complete without taking the Tram Tour. This mini-tour of the Johnson Space Center will wisk you through the old Mission Control Center, Hanger X, the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility, and Rocket Park.
