Bass Harbor, Maine

Here's a good close-up of the light itself. Bass Harbor Lighthouse has seen two generations of lens technology. The first generation lens was installed in 1858 and is called a 5th Order Fresnel Lens. In 1902 the intensity of the light was increased via optics using a 4th Order Fresnel Lens. The beacon is now powered by electricity and the lighting infrastructure holds two bulbs; one is designated as backup in case the active bulb gives up the ghost. The light beam itself is intermittent and runs on a 4 second cycle. Originally the light was constant due to the limited technology in lighting (aka whale oil lamp).

So inspired by this wonderful historic sight, I don my creative hat and whip up a little artwork for your viewing pleasure. My goal here is to showcase just the lighthouse.

The end of my tour has arrived, I head back to the van with a head full of lighthouse knowledge and a great appreciation for Bass Harbor Lighthouse. I now understand why this attraction may be the most photographed sight in Maine. The only downside was I wasn't able to tour the inside. Maybe I should have knocked on the door and asked for a cup of sugar? Oh well. I give my tour of Bass Harbor Lighthouse a solid 4.5 thumbs-up rating.
